Research

I am an experienced researcher with a PhD in history (University of York) and an M.Litt in Art History (University of St Andrews). I have a wide knowledge and interest relating to social and clothing history topics in the modern and early modern periods and I am available to carry out research across a range of subjects. Recently, I have completed projects on Scottish folklore (Historic Environment Scotland) and school uniform and sex work (Tracy King, Learning to Think).

My PhD looked at the history of school uniform and my book on the subject, A Cultural History of School Uniform is available here (you can find it reviewed here). Recently I have focused my attention on the history of sex and intimacy in Scotland including contraception and sex work.

I am currently researching and writing a literary-focused guide to Edinburgh for Pen and Sword.
